Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox signed a proclamation earlier this month aiming to bring awareness to the disease of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Gladys Green, a volunteer with MS Canada, was on hand to witness the signing, and says she feels it's an important issue to bring attention to.

"It's exciting to put the awareness out there that we're still here for anybody that needs help with MS."

Green's involvement with the disease runs deeper than just the proclamation, as her family continues a community fundraiser which started as a family event.

"We're having the Barry Green family MS Fundraiser on July 13 at Fountain Tire. Last year we hit the milestone of $52,000 in ten years, and so we're going to continue it until I can't do it anymore."

Green notes that research is coming forward suggesting MS may be hereditary, and she wants everyone to know that she is dedicated to helping find a cure for the disease.

According to the government of Canada, more than 90,000 Canadians live with Multiple Sclerosis.
