Yesterday’s 4H Beef Club events went really well considering the heat.

That’s from Oakville 4H Beef Club Assistant Leader Taralea Simpson. She says the activities began at 10:00 a.m. with heifer and cow-calf entries.

“Once that was over, we headed straight into showmanship classes. That’s where the kids come out and showcase how well they’re doing with their steer. So, it’s all about them and how they make that steer look out in the ring. Following that, we had a brief break,” says Simpson, noting they tried to get as much as possible done in the morning before it got too hot. “We then moved into grooming […], the kids go through eight minutes of grooming their animal. That’s where they put products on them and make their hair look good and get them ready for the show ring.”

Simpson says they also held a sheep show for the first time in many years. She says the two young girls who entered worked really hard and notes it was one of the highlights of the day. She shares some of the other highlights.

“I think just the teamwork, you know, with the kids,” begins Simpson, “how they all helped each other to get out in the ring. And then you’ve got, of course, your Grand and Reserve Champion Steer.”

Oakville, received Reserve Champion. Lavallee’s steer also sold of the highest price at auction for $3.90 per pound.

For Sigurdson, this was his second year participating in the Beef Club competitions and also his second year winning the title of Grand Champion. Sigurdson notes it’s pretty awesome to have won.

Entries in the Beef Club were down this year with only the Portage and Oakville clubs participating. However, Simpson says the kids nonetheless put forth a superb group of animals.

Today, compared to yesterday, is a relatively calm day, says Simpson. They're holding a few inner club competitions and as well as awards.
