Alston George Carmichael

May 22,1927 to September 17, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alston George Carmichael on September 17, 2023, at the Portage District General Hospital, with family by his side.  Alston was 96 years old, born May 22, 1927 in Portage la Prairie, living a long and meaningful life.

Alston is predeceased by his wife Ruth (2004), his two brothers Keith (Gayleen) and Jack (Loretta), sister Velma and parents Stewart and Lillian.

Alston was a devoted family man who was always there for his children and grandchildren.   He was a loving husband to his wife Ruth who passed away in September 2004.  He is lovingly remembered by his son Ken (Lee Ann) granddaughters Sheridan and Madison, daughter Theresa and grandson Alex.

Al met the love of his life, Ruth Smith and married April 17, 1957.  They lived on Cochrane Street in Portage la Prairie and continued to reside there for the rest of their lives.

Al spent his entire working life (40+ years) in the plumbing and heating service industry acquiring his sheet metal and plumbing journeyman classification. He worked for and then took over his father's plumbing business.  Al and Ruth worked together to run the family business for many years until retirement.

Al was an avid gardener, often providing his neighbors and friends with the excess bounty his garden produced.  Baking was another passion and no-one could compete with his homemade lemon pies and cinnamon buns.

One of his favorite hobbies was the installation and operation of amateur radio (HAM) equipment, acquiring his Amateur Radio Operator Certificate and communicated with others all around the world.  Another hobby was the building of radio controller planes.

In his later retirement years, he enjoyed going on vacation with his daughter and grandson with one of his most interesting and enjoyable destinations being a European tour.   He enjoyed weekly Sunday family suppers and holiday gatherings.  He also enjoyed walking to the coffee shop, rain, shine or snow, on a daily basis.   He had many friends in this coffee group that provided great companionship and laughter.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kinnear and the staff at the Portage Hospital Rehabilitation Ward for the excellent care and compassion they showed towards our father.
