Days after extreme cold weather made its way to Portage la Prairie, a warm spell is coming in time for the weekend.

Environment Canada and Climate Change Canada's Terri Lang explains we've had a shift in the jet streams.

"The jet stream is that delineator between the cold air to the north and the milder air to the south," says Lang. "We're having some weather systems push onto the B.C. coast, and that pushes some milder air in. So, once the jetstream kind of goes into more of a westerly direction, we usually get more seasonal temperatures. and that really cold air gets pushed out and farther to the east and north, where it should be."

Lang says as a result, we will see milder temperatures for the weekend into much of next week. However, it's not all good news.

"Milder air has the ability to hold more moisture. We also have that risk of freezing drizzle that comes with it. People should be aware of that, because it can certainly play havoc with the roads," says Lang. "As well, we're keeping an eye on a system developing next week. It is a Colorado Low. We're just trying to figure out how far into southern Manitoba it's going to make its way into, and how deep it's going to be. That looks like it's going to start affecting the southern parts of southern Manitoba maybe Tuesday night, and then Wednesday, Thursday."
