In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Portagers stepped up for the "Blow Away Hunger" fundraiser on Friday as it surpassed all expectations.

Throughout the day we were able to raise an impressive $13,027 to combat food insecurity in our area. On the food and toy side of things, the number of containers filled was the same; however, this year's box was much bigger than last year's, meaning that the donations were considerably up.

One incentive to donate to this fundraiser was the chance to win a top-of-the-line Craftsman Select Snowblower from RONA Portage la Prairie. This exciting incentive motivated residents to contribute generously to the cause.

This drive was only twelve hours, and the generosity of our community showed. We had close to 500 people come and donate something towards the Salvation Army and their Christmas Hamper Program. Major Brenda Hammond from the Salvation Army notes how impressed she is by the community.

"We had more people this year," explains Hammond. "There were lots of times four to five cars were waiting. There was great enthusiasm from Rona and just a very positive experience."

Local businesses also played a crucial role in the fundraiser's success, with many stepping up to contribute to the overall donation. Their commitment to addressing local issues highlights the generosity of businesses and the community they serve. Ian Currie, the Plant Manager at Richardson International says that helping the community is one of the most important things that they can do as a local business.

"Richardson is really proud to be working in the community and we love supporting community events that can have a wide reaching impact and this is one of those. Hunger can touch anybody from young to old so, we are just excited and grateful that we got to help out."

The brand-new Craftsman Select 24-inch gas snow blower worth $1300 served as a symbol of appreciation for participants, with one lucky individual set to enjoy it as soon as the snow falls. Despite the lack of snow on the ground, the winner, Cheryl Martin, says that they are thankful for the Snowblower this holiday season.

"I always enter these draws and never win."

The Blow Away Hunger fundraiser stands as a testament to the power of addressing critical issues and fostering a sense of unity among Portagers. This truly shows that when the need arises, Portage la Prairie and the surrounding area are always willing to step up.
