A Brandon University program which brings the education to local aspiring teachers may soon see another intake of students.

Representatives from the Brandon University Northern Teacher Education Program proposed a partnership with the Portage school board last night to help them expand.

Mel Lall explained the program would eliminate barriers in accessing teaching education.  This includes distance from universities in larger urban centres and the cost of travelling there.

The partnership would require a feed of students for the program and possibly a location in the city.  BUNTEP currently educates 21 students from the Rufus Prince building, and would need a minimum of 30 students for another intake.

Portage assistant superintendent Hazen Barrett says the school division is exploring the proposed partnership.
