The female U18 AAA Central Plains Capitals are winners of two consecutive contests against the Interlake Lightning. The girls defeated the Lightning 2-1 yesterday on the road and returned home tonight to secure a 3-2 win, however, this was a game that showed the Capitals' resilience.

Kenady Christensen opened the scoring early in the third period for the Lightning and would chip in with an assist on Seanna Prince's goal late in the frame as well. Izzy Colatruglio got the Caps on the board near the midway mark of the game, but Central Plains still entered the final period down 2-1.

Midway through the third, Danika Botterill skated through a few Interlake defenders to get in tight, but she was unable to get a clean shot off. While Botterill couldn't find the back of the net, the puck was still loose in front, and Taylor Bell was able to get just enough of her stick on it to get it across the red line and tie the game.

With three and a half minutes left to play, the Capitals found themselves on the power-play. The Lightning were able to capitalize on a mistimed line change by Central Plains as Sarah Shewchuk had a breakaway chance. She faked short-side before stretching her stick out to fire the puck on the far side of the net, but goalie Elyse Denbow absolutely robbed her with the pad and kept it a tie game.

On the ensuing faceoff, Botterill picked the puck up and went coast-to-coast, taking the puck into the offensive zone along the boards. She circled Interlake's net before cutting to the slot and ripping a shot past Katelyn Dorsch. Botterill walks us through the play.

"I was skating around and had some speed. I saw an opening, went through it, and just took the chance," Botterill explains.

This was Botterill's fourth game back on the ice after missing an extended period due to an injury. She outlines what it has been like adjusting back to the game.

"At the start, it was kind of nerve-wracking. I was hoping not to get hurt again, but now I'm starting to get going," Botterill continues. "After getting a few games in, it feels better, and my confidence is coming back."

Despite missing a multitude of games, Botterill is still placed fifth in the league when it comes to total goals scored this season. The sniper describes the keys to the victory in this outing.

"We just kept pushing. Even though we were down, we just kept trying, kept going, and kept battling for rebounds," says Botterill.

The Capitals will return to home ice next weekend for a pair of games, the first of which takes place on Saturday as they welcome the Westman Wildcats to the BDO Centre at 4:00. They will follow that with a morning bout with the Pembina Valley Hawks on Sunday at 11:00.
