Another update has been provided to the Portage and District Chamber of Commerce regarding the Saskatchewan Avenue Rejuvenation Project.

Early in the week, crews came to work to discover rain over the weekend had exposed some bones in the bottom of the excavation between 16th and 17th Street. The RCMP were called, and after an inspection, the Province sent out an archeologist who determined they were bison bones. The archeologist says Saskatchewan Avenue used to be a main trail going east/west, so they were not surprised to find the bones.

After that event, crews got back to work and had a productive week. This week, they will be milling the remaining asphalt in the eastbound median lane between 4th and 7th Street which will result in 5-10 minute closures on the intersections at the median only. Later in the week, asphalting will result in 1-2 hour closures of the median openings. Straight-through traffic should not be affected. It's believed landscaping should be close to done, meaning the entire section from 4th to 7th will almost be finished.

On the west-end of the city, the excavation should continue to 18th and past and will not result in a closure. The work will be staged to allow one through-lane at all times. The traffic signal is expected to be up and running next week.

Last but not least, the sidewalk and bike path from 7th Street moving west will be prepared throughout the week so you'll be able to see what it'll look like when completed.
