Tragedy struck Dakota Plains First Nation Saturday morning, when a house fire claimed the life of 45 year old Dwayne Pashe.

His brother Kim attempted a rescue, but was unable to do so, and sustained minor injuries as well.

Chief Orville Smoke says the community is providing support for the grieving family, but admits it will take time for the entire community to recover. He's grateful for the response when the fire was reported, singling out the Long Plain and Portage fire departments, as well as other responders. Smoke says the community realizes they're not alone.

He adds the band office is the centre of support for the family and the rest of Dakota Plains. Smoke says they're providing basic but necessary support services -- talking to the family, making them comfortable, and ensuring their needs are met.

The funeral for Dwayne Pashe will be held Thursday.
