The Portage Assisted Living Corporation has been making strides in its fundraising efforts and the construction of the Dufferin Villa.

The project has been in motion for several years, and construction began in 2020. Portage Assisted Living Corporation director Ruth Brownridge says they're almost in the final stretch.

"We continue to receive donations for Dufferin Villa. Our total now is $800,000, which is amazing, and we are so grateful for all the support we have received from the community," says Brownridge, "We will start the final lap in our Drive To A Million fundraising campaign in October."

The facility will provide 53 one and two-bedroom affordable assisted housing suites for seniors. The complex will also provide two meals a day served in a dining room, along with light housekeeping. Brownridge gives thanks to a few donors for their recent donations.

"Hills Drug Store has given us a donation of $5,000. They are proud to be able to make this donation to help further benefit our community," she says. "Ralph and Illona Funk also gave us $1000 towards the project."

The Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation heavily supported this project by investing $16.8 million, as well as having 17 of the units will be leased at 80 per cent of the median market rent for the area with financial assistance from CMHC. Brownridge says construction is progressing well and on schedule.

"60 to 70 per cent of the building is completed, and we are still looking at our December-January move-in date," says Brownridge. "We have received a large number of applications, and the applicants have now been notified. Also, those who want to start the commitment process for a suite have sent in a deposit."
