United Way Central Plains recently helped out a school in Holland with some grant money.

Executive Director Randi Kehler says it was part of their Accessibility Grant program.

Presenting the cheque"We provided $1,057 to Holland Elementary School in order for them to be able to lay rubber mats from the door of the school to the swing set," says Kehler. "It's to help a little boy in a wheelchair so that his caretakers are able to push him from the door to the swing set."

She says the staff can then hook up the boy's special swing and he can enjoy the outdoors. Kehler says it's so much better than having to wheel him across pea gravel, noting the mats are simply laid down on the ground, making it easier for wheelchairs.

She says the school was extremely excited and the students were amazingly glad along with their classmate, noting there are a lot of great kids in that school.

"We're just thrilled to be able to help different communities like that," adds Kehler. "And that's the point of the Accessibility Grant and the Community Response Grant. It's able to reach into the rest of our catchment area that doesn't necessarily have a non-profit agency funded through us. But there's still a need for different things in those communities. It's a way for us to be able to help our whole catchment area."

Kehler says grant applications are on the website, and you can call and receive forms by email or visit their office. She notes it's straightforward and takes only a few minutes to fill out. Kehler adds they vote on them every month, and there are no deadlines.
