On March 3, Rathwell marks their 50th Annual Snowmobile Derby, a beloved tradition benefiting the Rathwell Volunteer Fire Department. Despite a snow-light winter cancelling outdoor rides, Rathwell Memorial Hall will host indoor festivities from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., including poker hands, a hot roast beef dinner, prize draws, and a performance by local country artist Nelson Little.

Reflecting on the milestone, Bailey Delf, the President of the Derby, acknowledges the scaled-back celebrations due to weather but emphasizes the community's resilience.

"Typically, we do have the outdoor ride," Delf explains. "But with the way this winter is going, there hasn't been enough snow. So, we had to cancel our outside run. The main event in the hall is still going on."

Delf also shared that the grand prizes for the big celebration raffle include a 2024 Ski Doo Backcountry Sport 600, a Traeger Smoker and a $500 gift card to Elkhorn Resort and Spa.

Celebrating 50 years is no small feat, highlighting the dedication of past and present committee members and the broader community. Delf notes what happens with the money raised.

"100 per cent of the proceeds from the Derby go to the Rathwell Volunteer Fire Department." Delf shares, "That's how the Derby started out back in 1974 and that's how it's operated fully since then. Last year, we were able to generate $10,000 that to go toward their operations."

Delf invites participation in the grand prize raffle until March 3, 9:00 p.m., emphasizing the community's crucial role in sustaining this tradition.
