A 35-year-old man faces several charges stemming from an incident earlier this month in Portage la Prairie.

On June 1, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP were just clearing from a call in the 500 block of 2nd Street NW when a male, 35, from the neighbourhood drove into his driveway and began voicing his displeasure with the police in the area.

The officer could smell the odor of alcohol coming from the male. Because the officer saw him drive and park his vehicle, the officer requested that he provide a breath sample on a roadside screening device. The driver refused to provide a breath sample and was arrested.

When officers searched the vehicle the male had been driving, a loaded firearm was located as well as different rounds of ammunition.

The male was charged with refusal to comply with demand (alcohol), careless use of a firearm, two counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition in a vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The male had his license suspended and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 60 days. He was released to appear in court at a later date.
