Big Brothers Big Sisters Portage la Prairie and the MCC Thrift Shop joined forces to hold a fundraiser.

MCC takes a portion of their sales for the day and pays it forward to the selected organization.

BBBS Executive Director Dawn Froese says this idea started eight years ago.

"MCC Thrift Store was making opportunities for agencies to have a day at their store, and so, we became one of the recipients of that. Every year we write a letter asking if we could do that again, and we were granted that opportunity this year."

MCC handed over a $4,000 cheque to the local BBBS chapter, which will be put towards programming.

Froese says it's wonderful to be able to see people support Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"If people ask around, probably someone they know has either been a Big Brother or Big Sister, or their children have perhaps been in our program. So, it's a widely known organization, and people seem to understand really what we're doing for the community, and how we are helping the children in the different programs that we run. It feels really good to know that and then to see their support both with coming out and shopping, but also giving us opportunities to better our organization."

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are now shifting gears as the season changes. Here's what they have in store.

"For the fall, we don't usually do any fundraising. We try and support United Way as they begin their campaign, but we are looking at starting, are trying to figure out how to start our in-school mentoring programs."
