If you drive into Southport, you will see a change in the green space toward the southeast of the entrance.

Some new trees that were recently planted. McKenzies Funeral Home's Jeff Dubois explains it's part of a memorial for people's loved ones who left us.

Jeff Dubois"Each year, we have a tree dedication service held for all of the families that we serve the previous year," says Dubois. "We plant trees all around Portage and surrounding areas. We've done some cemeteries, some at Fort la Reine Museum, some schools. The last couple of years, Southport was generous enough to give us some land in the park where they put up the new plane and the last couple of years we planted trees out there."

He notes this services is done each third Sunday in August and follows a letter sent to families they served throughout the previous year at their funeral home at McKenzies. Dubois says the ceremony invitations are then followed by choice of a tree with a short dedication service on location.

"Our first tree dedication was in 1998. And we plant trees every year for every family that we serve here at McKenzies. So, there are many, many trees in the surrounding area. And people do go back and visit them. That's their tree, and it's something we give back to the community and to the families we serve."
