Residents living in the area of 3rd Street NE to 10th Street NE, between Saskatchewan Avenue and Fisher Ave. E, are being encouraged to stay indoors due to poor air quality stemming from an early morning fire.

A large stack of railway ties located along the tracks in the east end of Portage caught fire this morning. Thick black smoke and significant flames could be seen a little before 6 a.m., Sunday.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is also encouraging residents in the area to close all windows until further notice. Those with health conditions, such as asthma, should relocate until further notice. Smoke conditions should improve as the day goes on and everyone is asked to please stay away from this area. For more information contact the Fire Hall at 204-239-8340.
