Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen was in Portage today at the Portage Fire Department. She made presentations of Canada 150 Certificate Awards to first responders.

Bergen wearing firefighter suit"The 150th celebration is a time when communities get together and we do cake, and parties," explains Bergen. "But I think it was important that we recognize why Canada is such a great country to live in. And I believe one of those reasons is because we have such a dependable first-responder group of people, not only in Manitoba and the riding but right across Canada."

Deputy Fire Chief Dave Holmes says it's a great feeling to be recognized for a job they've chosen to do without the expectation of being thanked.

Local 1079 Union President of Portage Professional Firefighters Chris Perry says it's an honour none of them look for, and adds he loves the job they do for the city and surrounding community.
