This week is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week. RCMP Constable Larry Neufeld says police will be cruising the roadways on the lookout for impaired driving. He says they want to get the word around that impaired driving is simply unacceptable.

"If you are drinking, you can obtain rides through various sources in Portage that will actually drive outside of Portage as well," says Neufeld. "So, it's not like we don't have a service in the area. We will be out there looking. We also want to educate people in town here that we have multiple shuttles and multiple services."

He notes they want to see impaired driving statistics to drop down to as little as possible. Neufeld says, although there's no ride-share program in the province yet, it may come in the future. He says awareness is on TV, radio and as much media as possible.

"People will just neglect or refuse to believe anything will ever happen to them," continues Neufeld, "and continue to get behind the wheel. We really want to stress that it's not acceptable. The public doesn't believe it's acceptable."

Neufeld says nobody wants to arrive home at risk, and have to tell loved ones about the passing of other loved ones due to a collision, etc. He says it's all about everyone's safety.
