Jan Bulis snapped a 2-2 tie late in the third period to lead the Vancouver Canucks over Calgary 3-2.   Jaromir Jagr played for the New York Rangers for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder nearly five months ago.  The Rangers lost 2-1 to the Islanders.

Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Konowalchuk
has been forced to retire.  Tests revealed the 33-year-old suffers
from a genetic disease that can lead to irregular heart rhythms.

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame opened its doors to its five
newest members.  the newcomers are Hhenry ''gizmo'' Williams, Matt
Dunigan, Bobby Jurasin, Allen Pitts and builder Victor Spencer.
Spencer spearheaded a group that landed the BC Lions franchise in
1954.

One night after tying Detroit for first place in the AL Central,
Minnesota's bats went dormant in a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White
Sox.  The Twins remain even with the Tigers, who wasted a five-run
lead and lost to Kansas City 9-7 in 11 innings.  The Tigers would
win the division if it the teams finish tied.

Gary Sheffield hit a tiebreaking, three-run drive that led the
New York Yankees over Toronto 7-2.  Before the game, the Yankees
said Randy Johnson has a herniated disc in his lower back, and it
could prevent him from pitching in the playoffs next week.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have moved into first place tie with San
Diego in the National League West.   The dodgers scored two runs in
the top of the ninth to beat San Francisco 4-3.  The Padres lost 3-1
to Arizona.

After nearly giving up all of their NL Central lead, St. Louis
got a badly needed win, 10-5 over Milwaukee.  The Cardinals lead the
division by a game and a-half over Houston, which lost 4-1 at
Atlanta.  St. Louis had a seven-game lead with 12 games to go but
wasted nearly all of it by losing eight of nine.
