A call has been put out to get your local heroes recognized.

Our Manitoba Heroes is an annual event where Manitobans are celebrated for the great things they do in their community.

Committee chairman and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Paul Bennett says they came up with the concept seven years ago.

"It started around 2012, with a friend of mine Jeff McWhinney, and we wanted to do something in our communities that would provide awareness, recognition, to these wonderful people out there that are doing so many tremendous things," says Bennett. "Tireless hours, all this passion, and emotion they put towards, to make our place a better place to be."

He says many Manitobans put forward the effort to better their communities, and do not expect anything in return. Our Manitoba Heroes wants to make sure those people get noticed for their hard work.

"We need nominations. It's interesting, of all the great things that are happening in rural Manitoba, whether it's southeast, central or Pembina Valley, we know there's great things going on there, but nobody knows about you," says Bennett. "It's hard to be able to say, 'Hey, well, because they just haven't heard about us.' Of the thirty (winners) from our previous six years, we've had one winner from outside of the perimeter."

He notes that it is easy to nominate someone. All you have to do is go to www.ourmanitobaheroes.ca and click Heroes at the top of the page.

Nominations are due by May 31st. This year's gala will be held in Winnipeg at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre on Friday, October 18th.
