The residents of Oakville will have a new daycare and gathering space soon.

The new Oakville Community Hall is under construction, with workers currently focused on the interior. President Eric DeLong says it's been a long time coming.

"Construction has been pretty smooth all the way through," explains DeLong. "The plan is to be propping it up in late spring or early summer and we're really, really excited."

While it's obviously a great addition for the residents of Oakville, DeLong is quick to point out that it can be a draw for people all across the Central Plains who are looking for a place to gather.

"I think the daycare is going to be filling a huge need in the community," notes DeLong. "It's no secret there are daycare shortages around the province. In our area, the waiting list was almost full within a couple of days, so I know it's going to be really good for the families around here."

The project was kicked off in 2017 when the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie sold the plot of land for a dollar. Seven years later, they're close to waving goodbye to the old community hall.
