A new City Council's officially in place in Portage la Prairie. They were sworn in last night at City Hall.

Mayor Ken Brennan describes the ceremony as exciting, but he's eager to move forward and get to work. He calls it a strong council, and believes the future's bright for the city.

Brennan named Dave Quinn as deputy mayor. Quinn's ecstatic to be selected. He says having that vote of confidence from the mayor is awesome.

Committee chair appointments were also announced. Quinn remains as Finance Chair. He's excited to retain the portfolio, and feels the City will do well if it remains on its present course.

Janet Shindle takes over Community Services. She's looking forward to developing a new multi-plex, as well as initiating a social planning agenda.

Irvine Ferris is the new Public Safety Chair. He wants to improve communication between victims, the City, and police. He's also interested in solutions to things like petty crimes.

Orville Wagner moves to Transportation, and feels there's plenty to deal with, including improvements to Saskatchewan Avenue.

Jeff Bereza chairs Economic Development. He plans to use his background in sales to attract new businesses to the community.
