If you're having a struggle with paying your rent, the province has a program for you.  It's called Rent Assist.

Portage Community Revitalization Corporation Local Immigration Partnership Coordinator Mitch Tilk explains.

"I just wanted to encourage people to look into applying for Rent Assist. If they're renting a property, there's a lot of people that would qualify for Rent Assist who aren't accessing it right now," says Tilk. "You don't necessarily need to be on EIA. You can apply for a non-EIA Rent Assist. You just need to be a Canadian citizen or a Canadian resident, and then make under a certain threshold of income."

He notes he encourages anyone to apply, and you never know if you might be accepted. Tilk says Rent Assist is for people who are renting and fall under the low-income status. Money is provided by the province to help cover your rent.

"If you're on EIA, you can apply through your EIA counsellor. If not, you can go online and download the application form from the Manitoba Government websites," adds Tilk. "You just google Rent Assist Manitoba, and something will come up. I think you can pick up the form from the provincial building here, too. It's based on a percentage of your income."
