With the jolliest time of year upon us, Portage City Council wanted to get in on the fun.

The City of Portage la Prairie held its second annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony to kick off the holidays. The McKenzie United Church choir was singing carols before the lights strung around the tree were lit up.

Mayor Sharilyn Knox says this year was an upgrade compared to last year. She explains that last year's ceremony was very spur-of-the-moment, and they had a lot more time to plan for the 2023 edition.

"I just love that this sort of kicks off our city's celebration," explains Knox. "It's a great way to light the tree and be ready for the (Rotary Santa Parade of Lights) on Friday night."

Knox adds that she asked Kennedy Doyle, daughter of councillor Colin Doyle, if she would be willing to be the one to plug in the tree lights. Kennedy says she also liked this year's ceremony as opposed to 2022.

"It made me feel really happy and really surprised that I got to do it," says Kennedy.

On top of the celebrations, they were also accepting donations for the Salvation Army. Knox was glad to see the boxes filling up as this time of year can be especially stressful for those in need.
