The Portage Cobras Soccer League is still set to make it's debut for the youth in the area as things currently stand. This was set to be the league's first season. It sees a six-on-six game rather than each team having nine or eleven players. League president Chad Green gives more details.

"Right now we're still making the plans as if it's going to proceed, nothing's being canceled as of yet," says Green. "We're a little bit flexible, maybe if it has to be pushed back a month or something we'll look at doing that. We're trying to come up with different options and if they work for everyone that's signed up then we can do that."

The original start date for the league was, and currently still is, May 1st. Green says they're pretty much following along with what the Manitoba Soccer Association is doing.

"Right now, even though we're not a part of our provincial organization, we're kind of following their guidelines because they get their guidelines from Canada Soccer," says Green. "We're basically following what their recommendations are and they haven't canceled anything yet. They're the same way, they're just kind of waiting to see and if things need to be pushed back then they'll just push some things back."

Green says he would also be willing to run the program through the summer if enough of the kids signed up would be willing to, and if that's what the circumstances call for. He talks about what the program is going to look like.

"So, this year, we have enough players just for one group," says Green. "We'll be running 7-10-year-olds in one league. We also run weekly training sessions for kids that want to get better where we'll focus on skill development."

Green notes the training sessions are for ages 4-13 and they will still be taking registrations for that portion of the program.

He says he isn't sure what's going to happen but he just wants to see the kids be able to get out on the field to be active and be social, especially after these current times of social distancing.
