Monday following Sunday's storm caused a lot of slippery conditions throughout the region's highways and roads. Portage Fire Department firefighter Curtis Rance says their first call came in at 10:33 a.m.

"It was reported that a jackknifed semi occurred at Hwy. 1 and Angle Rd," explains Rance. "That was in the westbound lanes. We responded with one truck and two members. It was a semi that was loaded with paint. No EMS transport occurred. They cleared the scene there at 10:55."

He notes their next call came in at 10:53 a.m.

"There was a motor vehicle collision involving a semi at Hwy. 1 and Road 27 W. One truck and two members responded to that. There was a fuel spill at that one and environment was contacted to attend the scene. Nobody was  transported by EMS. They cleared the scene there at 11:36."

The phone rang again at 12:24 p.m.

"It was a semi rollover on Hwy. 16 at Road 67 N. One truck with two members attended that scene and I have no indication of anybody being transported. And they cleared that scene at 1:31 p.m."

Soon afterward, came the big call at 1:46 for the semi pile-up at Hwy. 1 E of 34 W on the bridge that goes across the CN railway

"Reports of six semis, a plow truck and numerous vehicles were originally reported," continues Rance. "There were two passenger vehicles and six semis involved. One person was trapped in their vehicle. They were extricated safely. There were multiple EMS transports. I don't have the exact number. STARS attended the scene and helped with the patient assessments, but they did not transport anyone. And we attended that scene with two trucks and four members and we cleared that scene at 3:20 p.m."

All these accidents were caused by slippery highway conditions.
