The Girl Guides of Portage la Prairie are looking to make up for lost time as they get back outside following the loosening of COVID restrictions.

The girls held a cookie sale this past Wednesday to raise funds for the programs and activities they plan to run in the near future. Kiera Roy, who's been a Girl Guide for eight years, talks about what they get up to.

"We do camping, crafts and we have a lot of badges we can earn and we do a whole bunch of different activities to earn those badges," says Roy. "We did one of our science badges recently, we made lava lamps and marshmallow cannons."

The cookies were selling for five dollars a box and there was a steady stream of customers wanting to help out the Girl Guides. She goes into detail on some of her favourite things about being a Girl Guide.

"I love the camping and selling cookies and hanging out with the girls," explains Roy. "It shut down for a while, but it started up a little while ago and we did do masks outdoors for a bit, which meant a lot of campfires."

Now that the Girl Guides can operate more freely than they could over the past two years, she adds she, along with the rest of the Girl Guides, are very excited to jump into what's coming down the pipeline. They're hoping to have first-aid and self-defense classes paid for with the money raised from their sale.
