Stride Place was filled with all sorts of skaters this weekend as the Portage Skating Club held the 2020 Skate Canada Manitoba Central Regionals.

Portage, Carman, Altona, Winkler, Pilot Mound, Notre Dame, and Holland all showed up to compete.

Portage Skating Club President Shawn Cabak says it's exciting for the kids to compete in front of their home town.

"For a lot of the kids, they're fairly new to the competing world. For some of them it's their first competition, and to be able to showcase their skills in front of their family and friends is quite exciting for them. It's also enjoyable for everyone to watch these up and coming new skaters."

The youngest skaters are in the show are around 6-7 years old, and it goes all the way up to teenagers performing.

Cabak talks about how the competition is judged.

"The scoring system has changed a little bit over the years. The kids are judged and awarded from anywhere to bronze, silver, or gold certificates and ribbons."

They just kicked off the second half of their season, and the next big event will be the Carnival on March 3rd. There will be performances from All-Star Skaters, Group Skaters, and Can-Skaters.
