Another high school shooting incident has occurred in the United States.

One girl who was a hostage of the middle-aged gunman was shot and later died in hospital, in Bailey, Colorado.

The man then turned the gun on himself as a SWAT team moved in.

It's something that can impact kids in Portage, according to School Division Psychologist Barbara Johnston. She recommends watching your kids for changes in behaviour which can be signs they're upset.

Johnston also urges parents to talk openly with kids about the incident, and what plans the division has in place for their protection.

She adds kids can become de-sensitized, either believing it can't happen here or becoming fascinated without fearing it.
