The Portage la Prairie Regional Library will be receiving $10,532.56 to upgrade services for the visually impaired.

The money comes from the Manitoba Accessibility Fund (MAF) as the library will be one of 42 recipients splitting a total of $890,000. Director of the library Jen Kendall says they'll be buying Daisy Readers, which will help patrons listen to materials from the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA).

"It'll just really do a lot to increase access for those patrons, and once they launch, we'll also have training available for staff and patrons," notes Kendall. "Especially caregivers of people with perceptual disabilities."

The library will also receive upgrades to the accessibility technology for their public access computers, including a better screen reader software and improved keyboards.

"I was really thrilled because this is something I've been passionate about for a long time," says Kendall when asked about her reaction to being approved by MAF. "I helped (CELA) with the training when they started offering services here in Manitoba because I worked with them in the same role in Alberta, so being able to offer that to our patrons in Manitoba is really helpful."

This is the library's first time receiving funding from MAF, and Kendall can't wait to put it to good use.
