The City of Portage la Prairie will bring the holiday season to life this Thursday with its first-ever Christmas tree lighting ceremony at City Hall.

The event will start at 7 p.m. with carols sung by the Mackenzie Church choir and hot apple cider.

Mayor Sharilyn Knox says that this is the first year the city welcomes people out to be a part of the lighting process.

"We thought it's been a long few years with lots of different things, and why not be a part of bringing more holiday spirit to Portage."

Knox explains that this event is for everyone, not just those who celebrate Christmas.

"I just love seeing people in our community with all the different traditions and cultures that come along with this holiday season," continues Knox. "It's all about celebration. It doesn't have to be necessarily about Christmas. It's about just embracing our community and the lovely spirit of giving and kindness through the holiday season."

The Portage Mayor adds that she also hopes to see a lot of Christmas joy from the community the following night, on Friday, when the Portage Rotary Club hosts its first Santa Claus parade since 2019.
