The Portage Match Play Golf League crowned their first champion yesterday. Brett Janz took home the Brad Young Match Play Trophy after defeating Clark Bolton after 14 holes. Janz outlines how the match went.

“We both struggled at the start, we both bogeyed three of the first five holes,” Janz explains. “After that, I kind of figured out how to golf again and didn’t make a bogey the rest of the day, while mixing in a couple of birdies.”

The league coordinator, and champion, says they will definitely bring the league back in 2022.

“It was a really fun league and it was good to play with different people,” says Janz. “It was good to have 24 people this year but I’m hoping to grow that for next year.”

Janz notes next season they will probably have a smaller number of teams per pool during the round-robin matches. He says having two pools of 12 was probably a little too large as they ended much later in the year than they initially planned. Janz adds he’s just happy the weather cooperated.

Janz gives thanks to Brad Young for donating prizes and helping fund the first season of the Portage Match Play Golf League.
