The Portage la Prairie MCC Thrift Shop Recently wrapped up its charity days.

Over the past five weeks, MCC hosted local organizations to help raise awareness and help raise funds. General Manager Kevin Hamm notes this year, MCC chose three local organizations.

"This year, we have donated to quite a few, and we're just wrapping them up this week. We have just celebrated three (agencies) in the last five weeks, and that was Hope's Journey Home, Prairie Pregnancy Support Center and also the Family Resource Centre."

Each organization received a $3000 donation from MCC. As well, the organization donated 100 per cent of sales during the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. $1600 was divided evenly between Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services and MCC Manitoba's Indigenous Neighbours Program. Hamm says it's great to help make a difference.

"We receive tremendous support from our community and most of it, of course, comes in the form of material donations, which means we can help so many people, not only here in our store, but we're also able to share our material donations. I'm talking things like clothing, furniture housewares with other agencies as well."

Each year, the MCC board gets plenty of requests from charities to be a part of the event, but Hamm notes for those who do get a charity day, it's a great chance for them to get out and represent their charity.

"Agencies are hidden from the public eye. So, a lot of times, people stumble upon them, or they hear about it and don't get to see the people or meet them and see what's going. We have lots of people regularly coming through our doors here at Portage MCC thrift shop and MCC furniture plus."
