A chillier than average July looks to be wrapping up with a blast of heat.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, you would have to go back to July 2nd to see the last time Portage experienced 30 degree weather. Meteorologist Rose Carlsen says the increase will mark a return to normal temperatures for this time of year.

"What was happening for quite a while was that our upper atmosphere was actually in a bit of a blocking pattern within a large upper low," explains Carlsen. "It was drawing a lot of cooler air from farther up north, pretty persistently towards Southern Manitoba and giving us cooler temperatures."

She adds that this low has also been the catalyst for the showers we've been receiving. Carlsen mentions that 30 degrees happens to be just a touch above seasonal average for this time of year.

"The climatological average at this time of year is around 27-28," notes Carlsen. "So, 30 is not much warmer than normal. It is a little bit, but it's not anything unheard of."

According to the July 20th forecast, we should hit 30 degrees at least twice as we head into next week.
