If you're 55 years of age or older, the Herman Prior Activity Centre in Portage la Prairie has a program available that may be of interest.

It's a mature driver program, and Centre Acting Executive Director Chris Dumont explains it's a free session hosted by Safety Services Manitoba and MPI.

"They talk to people about defensive driving techniques," she says, "Things that you can do to enhance your driving skills, especially if your reaction time is slower, if your vision has changed, your hearing has changed. Plus, there are always changes in road safety rules, so they're making sure that people are current on them."

Dumont acknowledges some people are concerned about taking the course. "It doesn't affect your driver's license, it's doesn't affect your insurance," she stresses, "That's always been some of the peoples' concerns is that 'are they going to take my license away, is my insurance going to go through the roof' -- no -- this is more to help the person stay a safe driver, and learn ways that they can compensate for changes that are happening to them."

Dumont adds it's being held May 15th, and about fifteen people are already registered.
