Parents and other drivers are being reminded by the Portage la Prairie RCMP about parking restrictions on 3rd Street Southwest, alongside Portage Collegiate's Prince Charles building.

School Liaison Officer Constable Pam Ellis says people are parking on the west side of the street, near the football field, in spite of no parking signs. She understands it's been done for a long time.

"There are No Parking signs there for a reason," she says, "We're starting to make sure those are being enforced more often. I'm going out and trying to get the message out there to educate that this is a safety issue that's causing a traffic hazard. We have kids that coming out that are running across the road to get to vehicles on the east side, and one of these days I'm afraid someone's going to get hurt, or something's going to happen.

Ellis stresses people the police have spoken to have responded positively.

"For the most part, people have been absolutely wonderful," she says, "And are quite content. I don't have an issue if someone is stopping, their child is waiting, they jump in the car -- less than 10 seconds, you're on you're way. That's fine. The same thing is if you're dropping them off, that's not an issue, because you're not stopping, you're not parking, you're not taking up that space."
