The Portage la Prairie RCMP teamed up with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service to recover a stolen vehicle.

Police got a call at 8 a.m. on April 6, about a stolen car from the 100 block of Lorne Avenue East in Portage.

Media Liaison Officer, Constable Larry Neufeld, describes how the events unfolded.

“A short time later that vehicle was involved in a theft of fuel from a service station on Highway 1, just west of Portage. Portage la Praire RCMP notified neighbouring RCMP detachments and Manitoba First Nations Police Service to be on the lookout for a suspect vehicle. The vehicle was seen near Sandy Bay a short time later. This vehicle then sped off."

A member of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service did recognize a male driver when they found him.

“The officer recognized the male as a 22-year-old male from Sandy Bay First Nation and told him he was under arrest. Once the male was in custody, the RCMP attended and tracked from where the male was arrested back to the stolen vehicle a short distance away. The male is charged with theft of a vehicle, theft of gas, and two counts of possessing property obtained by crime.”

The suspect was held in custody and appeared in court.
