Fresh off the heels of Lobsterfest, the Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie has brought a new member into the fold.

Peter Harrison officially joined the club on November 21. Harrison says this is the first volunteer group he's been a member of. He joined because he fell in love with the main message of Rotary, "service above self."

"I spent 42 years in the Air Force," explains Harrison. "I was posted here in 2000 for about six-and-a-half years. After that, I went to Germany, then back to Winnipeg before returning to Portage in 2013 and I've lived here ever since."

Harrison has been attending Rotary meetings and events well before becoming an official member, with some crediting him for being one of the most active volunteers during the club's Veggie Sale in September. He adds that club member Peter Fedak suggested that he would be a good fit for the club, so he decided to check it out.

"Meeting them, I thought they were very welcoming," notes Harrison. "It's a great chance to meet some people. I know a lot of the faces but now I can put some names to them."

In conclusion, Harrison says that anyone interested in joining Rotary should reach out, attend a meeting, or volunteer as a helping hand. He adds that you can take your time and be sure that it's for you before joining.
