As the days get shorter and summer begins to wind down, so do the sports leagues that take place during the warmer weather.

The Santa Clara Baseball League is down to two teams and the best-of-five final started last night with Plumas handing Minnedosa their first loss of the post season by picking up a 9-6 victory on home field. After finishing at the bottom of the standings in the regular season, Minnedosa has gone on a surprising playoff run that sees them competing for the championship. Plumas on the other hand finished with a 9-5 record and was second overall.

Plumas used the long ball to take game one on home field. In fact, all of their runs came from the result of a home run. Zac Yandeau was in beast mode hitting three himself including a grand slam, while collecting 8 RBIs. He was wisely walked in his other plate appearance. Sam Koncz also belted a solo home run for the hometown team. Rylan Denbow picked up the win throwing 6 plus innings while John Hutton was the hard-luck loser giving up only 7 hits. The Mavericks would load the bases in 7th to threaten but couldn't complete the comeback. Game 2 goes tonight at 6:30 in Minnedosa.

Meanwhile, game one of the Border Baseball League's East Division final belongs to Winkler. The Whips plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 6-2 victory over the Mud Hens in Morden. Game two in the best-of-three series goes Thursday at Arctic Field. The West Division final begins Thursday night in Pilot Mound as the Pilots host the defending champion Cartwright Twins.
