A small fire forced students and staff to evacuate classrooms at Fort la Reine school in Portage la Prairie on Wednesday.

Todd Cuddington, Superintendent of the Portage la Prairie School Division, shares that the fire started in one of the boy's bathrooms at 9:52 a.m.

"The school was evacuated, and the fire was extinguished quite quickly. As a result of the smoke in the building, students were dismissed to their parents."

Cuddington says that classes will resume on Thursday.

"We just wanted to vent the building and make some minor repairs before students return."

The Superintendent adds that no injuries occurred, and the evacuation was very smooth as the staff did an excellent job.

"The kids were great, and principal (Matt) Harkness managed the incident really smoothly. Fortunately, the RCMP and the Fire Department were on site quickly."

At this point, Cuddington notes the division doesn't know what started the fire, and an investigation with the RCMP and Portage la Prairie Fire Department is ongoing.
