The Portage Terriers and Steinbach Pistons, who both own 9-1 records and are tied for top spot in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's East Division, are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Terriers moved up from 13 to number seven this week. The Pistons, who suffered their first loss of the season last Friday, dropped from two to number nine. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars replaced the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Collingwood Blues as the number one nationally ranked team. The Terriers are on a northern swing this weekend with games in Swan Valley Friday and OCN Saturday. The Blizzard are the top team so far this year in the West Division. Both games are at 7 p.m. and both will be broadcast on CFRY.

At the high school, both varsity volleyball teams from PCI were on the court last night. The Saints defeated Stonewall 3 sets to 1 with scores of 28-26,23-25,25-14 and 25-15. The Trojans fell to St. James 3 sets to none. The scores were 25-4,25-19 and 25-14. The Saints hockey team kicks off their season today as they host Springfield, 4:15 p.m. at the BDO Centre for the Community. And the Trojans football team (2-3) is on the field tomorrow when they travel to Winnipeg to play the Elmwood Giants. The Giants are 0 and 5 for the season.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both recorded road wins Wednesday night. Brett Hyland scored the go-ahead goal on the power play 8:10 into the third period as Brandon edged the Prince George Cougars 2-1. Nate Danielson had the other Brandon goal. Carson Bjarnason made 39 saves and drew an assist on Hyland's goal. The Wheat Kings are 2-0 on their eight-game road trip which continues Friday night against the Giants in Vancouver. Connor McClennan and Conor Geekie scored power-play goals while Owen Pederson and Zach Benson had shorthanded markers as the Ice downed the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-1.


Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Dalton Schoen has been named a Week 18 Top Performer. Schoen caught seven passes for a career-high 162 yards and three touchdowns in the Blue Bombers 48-11 victory over the Edmonton Elks Saturday at IG Field. Schoen leads the CFL in both receiving yards (1,275) and in touchdowns (14) in his rookie season.
