The Portage Wolves are ready to scrum this spring as rugby is returning to Portage la Prairie.

Nathan Peto, head coach of the Portage Wolves Rugby Club says that he is ecstatic to get the season going again.

"I'm very excited, it's been a lot of fun starting the sport out here in Portage for young people for people to come out and try the sport. It's great to get another spring session in and get to see the kids back out and playing."

The club practices once a week on Thursdays for about an hour and fifteen minutes at the Rotary Republic of Manitobah Park. Peto notes that the way his team practices is a little different than most.

"We really practice as a club, so we start as all the kids together, doing the warmups and then we break into our different age groups and skill levels and practice with different skill-based centers across the field," he continues. "We really emphasize that message that we are a club, not just the team, and we expect the older kids to help the younger kids and we really go there and really get that team community feel around the club."

When PortageOnline asked the head coach what was going to make this year different compared to the last, he mentioned that they actually get to play in the spring time.

"In the spring league we typically play just strictly out of Winnipeg and play against four or five Winnipeg clubs where as in the fall we play in the Westman League. In that league we will play against Brandon, Dauphin, Souris, and Minnedosa. What you'll see is that there will be 4 tournaments in Winnipeg that we'll play in and just a little bit closer to home, less driving and we also will be introducing contact for 12 and up where in the West family contact starts at 10."

Peto says that if you are interested in playing they are already taking registrations.

"If you are interested in registering your son or daughter, we are taking registrations from right from 6 to 14 years of age you can register and send me an e-mail at portagerugby@gmail.com and I will make sure your information is there."
