The number of crimes against property, including theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen goods has increased when compared this past June to June of 2021.

The RCMP has released their crime stats and the Manitoba West District, which includes Portage la Prairie, saw a very slight decrease overall in the number of calls received, dropping from 5,121 to 5,080.

Crimes against property was the only category to increase, rising from 681 to 821. Theft under $5,000 increased from 140 to 251, while possession of stolen goods rose from 13 to 21. Break and enters did decrease, however, falling from 114 to 101.

Common police activities saw a very slight decrease, going from 649 to 641, with the most impactful drop being in suspicious person/vehicle/property, which fell from 301 to 249. Wellbeing checks increased, jumping from 83 to 113.

Crimes against the person fell from 367 to 353, with the assault sub-category dropping from 228 to 197.

Drug enforcement calls fell slightly from 46 to 40, with possession calls dropping from 13 to 10 and trafficking decreasing from 27 to 21.
