It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Thelma Jean Smoke-Martin with her family by her side on October, 26, 2023 at the Health Science Centre at the age of 64 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband Philip Martin; daughters Faith Smoke and Samantha Smoke; grandchildren Ashlei Orton, twin boys Brenden and Braden Saltise, Trinity Smoke, Jerry Smoke, Isiah Smoke, Ashton Smoke, Edwina Smoke-Kabestra, Viola Smoke-Kabestra, Jake Smoke-Kabestra, Lesa Smoke-Kabestra, Whitney Smoke-Kabestra and Dani-Lyn Smoke; great granddaughter Addison Robb; nephews Alvin Smoke (Marsha) and Nathan Hall; nieces Crystal (Hapa) Smoke, Darcy Hall and Lisa Smoke; brothers Kelly Smoke (Brenda) and Bob Peters (Anne); along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her mother Rowena McIvor (nee Smoke); father Samuel Myran; son Gabriel Smoke; brothers Arnold Smoke and Edward Sinclair; sister Viola Smoke and niece Heather Richard (nee Smoke).

Thelma Jean Smoke-Martin was born on May 6, 1959 to proud parents Rowena McIvor (nee Smoke) and Samuel Myran, she was the baby out of the five children. The family lived in Long Plain First Nation for a short time and then moved to Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate at young age. This is where she lived for many years. Later on in life she met the love of her life Philip Martin, they raised three children together and later married in 1993. They had six grandsons and seven granddaughters who she loved with all her heart. She would light up whenever she was around her grandchildren, they all held a special place in her heart along with her great granddaughter. She was a proud wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and cherished all of her family.

Thema Jean Smoke Martin enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, travelling, and visiting family and friends. She always made sure to say Hi and got along with most people. She was a very happy person, loving, caring and loved joking around. She will be missed by many, all who got to know her and loved her.

Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end, it simply means “I’ll miss you, Until we meet again.”

A wake will take place at Dakota Plains School at Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 4:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Dakota Plains School at Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm, followed by burial at the Dakota Plains Cemetery.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
