It is with great sadness that we share the news of Valerie “Val” Nelson’s passing on January 15, 2024, in Brandon, MB. Val was born on December 6, 1977, in Winnipeg and called Portage la Prairie home.

Val is mourned by her loving husband, Rick Nelson and their children, Alexis (Alanna), Precious, Everly, and Kingston. She was predeceased by her mother, Jeannette Johnson. Val is survived by her father Greg Johnson; sister Darla (Ian) and their children Colten (Erin), Emily (Layne), and Jennelle. Beyond her immediate family, Val leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, each of whom shared a unique bond with her.

Val’s life was a beautiful example of selflessness, and joy. At Portage Service for Seniors, she made a significant difference in the lives of many. At home, Val’s kitchen was a place of warmth and delicious aromas, a hub for family gatherings and laughter-filled game nights. Her caring nature wasn’t just reserved for her children; she had a way of making everyone feel loved and cherished.

Losing Val has left an indelible mark on our hearts. She was known for infectious laughter and genuine care for others. Val’s straightforward, no-nonsense advice, endeared her to many.

In celebrating Val’s life, a memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm.
