Victoria (Vikki) Melnyk

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Victoria (Vikki) Melnyk on July 28, 2023 at the Gladstone Health Centre at the age of 86 years.

Vikki leaves to mourn her two daughters:  Robin Melnyk-Befus of Cochrane, Alberta and Angelia Strilec (John Reschner) of Steep Rock, Manitoba.  As well, grandson Patrick (Rosalyn) Ferguson great-grandchildren Chase and Harper of Clandeboye, Manitoba.  She leaves behind three sisters:  Marion Davison of Innisfail, Alberta; Anne Michasiw of Chelmsford, Ontario; Margaret Mychaluk of Pocatello, Idaho, along with nieces, nephews, and friends.

Vikki was predeceased by her life partner Maurice Gillis, ex-husband Michael Strilec, son-in-law Larry Befus, parents Sam and Julia Melnyk, her two brothers Mike and Joey Melnyk and step-brother John Melnyk.

Vikki was born in Birtle, Manitoba and spent her childhood on the family farm.  She had lots of fun with her siblings.  The family moved to Portage La Prairie where she continued her schooling.  In her early career, she worked at CFB Portage in administration and serving at the Army Navy club.  Vikki loved fashion and style - if she liked a piece of clothing why not buy it in 3 different colours!  And shoes – lovely colors and high heels galore.  At Red River College, she obtained her hairdressing license and started Vikki’s Beauty Salon.  Robin & Angel were often models for her – a day out from school and funky hairdos (perms & colors) of the time.  Vikki enjoyed spending time with her friends.  There was always a seat at her table for a drink and conversation.  With a smile and laugh she lived life on her terms with determination.

The family would like to extend many thanks and much appreciation to the Gladstone Health Centre staff.  Mom enjoyed her short time there and we will always remember the kindness and care Mom received.  Thank you Thank you Thank you.

A private family ceremony will take place at a later date at Hillside Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Vikki’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 1379 Kenaston Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
