The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's 2022 is taking place on Saturday, May 28, at St. Vital Park in Winnipeg at 10:00 a.m. But if you're unable to get involved there, they have a virtual version for us right here in Portage.

Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba North Central regional coordinator Jennifer Harder explains it's part of a province-wide effort taking place throughout May and June.

"This is a fundraiser and the money that's raised through this walk is going to be kept in Manitoba, except for just a little part that's being committed to our national research that we participate in," says Harder. "This money is used by the main office in Winnipeg as well as the regional offices, including one here in Portage."

She notes anyone can get involved either as an individual or a team.

"You can do that by signing up at alzheimer.mb.ca and you can also go to that website to make a donation," adds Harder. "The virtual version allows you to walk, bike, and you can swim -- whatever you want -- and just collect donations from family or friends. You can post pictures on social media using #IGWalkforAlz, and just have fun. And you're raising money for a great cause."

Harder explains there are more than 23,000 Manitobans that have been diagnosed with dementia, and that number is expected to go up to over 40,000 Manitobans by the year 2038.

"So more than ever, it's really important to be raising money and awareness for such an important cause that affects so many people," notes Harder. "It's raising money that helps go toward that research as well to prevent, detect and treat Alzheimer's disease or any other forms of dementia. The money also goes toward some of the programs that are being offered here in the province to help persons that are living with dementia as well as their families of loved ones."
