Thanksgiving turkey didn't seem to hinder the West Park Royals Zone 4 Varsity Girls Volleyball lastnight. They swiftly defeated the Elm Creek Cobras in 4 sets winning 24-21, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-16.

Coach Shawn Cornish said it was great to have their first win of the season after losing their first two games. He talks about what they need to be successful for the rest of the season.

"We have three practices coming up that we need to really just fine tune a couple things, make sure we're ready for a couple teams we need to beat to make the playoffs. We'll just keep building on some of the basics we have in place right now," says Cornish.

Cornish says they've been preparing really well for the season, with a few players who haven't played much volleyball. He notes they've come a long way in a really short amount of time.

Left side power hitter Kristen Brewer says a positive attitude and teamwork really helped the girls gain their first win.

"Affirming each other even when we got down like, 'you can do this, keep going', and we have amazing coaches that keep driving us. It's just a positive team which always uplifts our spirits," Brewer says.

The girls head to St. Jean Baptiste to face the Saints on October 26th.
