Yes, that's the Portage Terriers on the ice this past weekend. Summer's officially over.

A new school year is upon us once again DUN DUN DUUUNNNN... Scary how quick that summer went by. Thankfully just because kids have to go back doesn't mean there's a shortage of fun on the events side of things.

- The Terriers kick off their preseason action Tuesday (Sept 6) night at the PCU Centre with a game between the rookies from the Dogs and the Virden Oil Capitals. Puck drop at 7pm.

- More Terriers.. they have their annual par 3 golf tournament on Saturday (Sept 10) at the Portage Golf Club. All 18 holes get converted to par 3's with a chance for everyone involved at more than $225,000 in prizes. Seriously, you read that right, hundreds of thousands of dollars, no foolin'. Still time to sign up. Do so by calling Heather Jordan at 204-870-1210. Don't miss out!

- Almost time for another campaign season for the Portage Plains United Way. They'll reveal their goal and who the non-profit groups are they'll help out this year at the kick-off luncheon this Thursday (Sept 8) at the Glesby Centre. Give them a shout for tickets.

- 30 years is a long time. Unless you're 30 years old, in which case it's not and you're still super young ;) Anyhoo, the Portage and District General Hospital Foundation is celebrating their 30th year by kicking things off with a question: What's the Scoop? It's a great question that you'll have to go to What's the Scoop? in Portage to answer on Friday (Sept 9) and also enjoy some fun with celebrity servers, prizes, a photo booth and of course, ice cream!

- Let's get physical, physical! PRRA is allowing everyone to take advantage of their fitness centre and the walking track for free (yes, zero dollars, nada, nothing) with their Hall Pass. Enjoy it between September 6th and 9th, 10am to 7pm. *doesn't apply to the pool

- A day of family fun sound enticing? Hopefully you said yes since MacGregor is hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday (Sept 11) from 12-4pm. Games, food and much more will be happening at the Centennial Park.

- Tons of registrations this week, find details here. Also if you have kids born in 2001 or 2002 and are interested in continuing soccer during the fall, try-outs for the Portage FC indoor soccer  team are Wednesday (Sept 7) from 6-7 at the Southport Field. Limited number of spots. Go prepared with outdoor cleats, shin pads, shocks, and all the other necessary equipment.

- Before it cools down for good, things will heat up this weekend during the 3rd annual charity beach volleyball tournament. Goes Friday (Sept 9) and Saturday at Republic Park. Money is being raised for the MS Society. Deadline has passed to register but I'm sure if you ask nice they'll get you and your team in last minute. Competitive and leisure divisions. Call Kecli (870-0282) or Kristen (856-6740) to register today!

- Remember how we started by talking Terriers? Well, that's exactly how we'll wrap this up. Sunday (Sept 11) is the annual flea market the team hosts. $3 admission, something for everyone, lunch served. Happens at the MNP Building on Island Park.
