It's the mid-point of October and we've had our first taste of snow. At least it didn't stay and we are done with it for now. If you're looking for something to do this weekend, here are 9 ideas. At least our events calendar is busy! (click on anything hi-lited to find out more)

1. Check out some live music

The Men In Kilts are finally able to perform their "cursed show. It had to be postponed several times already this year due to pandemic restrictions, weather and illness. Now, the Manitoba band is finally set to take to the stage tonight, (Friday) 7:30 p.m. at the Glesby Centre. Details here

2. Find a Job

By the time you read this, the two-day job fair at Red River College Portage campus may be done. (ends at 6 p.m. Friday) But even if you missed that event, you can still check out what the aviation industry has to offer in the area at the 2022 careers in aviation expo at Southport on Saturday. Details here

3. Vote

The municipal election is coming up on the 26th and in Portage, we have 4 candidates to choose from for mayor, 14 for the 6 council spots, and 14 for the 5 school board positions. See who is running here If you can't vote for some reason on the 26th and would rather vote Saturday, you can! It's advance poll day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Herman Prior Centre. Details here

4. Listen to a Terrier game on the radio/online

The Terriers are ranked 9th in the nation and are tied for tops in the MJHL. They also added a couple of 20 years olds this week that will make their debuts. The team plays in Swan Valley tonight and OCN tomorrow night with both games starting at 7 p.m. The Hi-Tec Industries pregame show is at 6:50 p.m. each night and you can listen to the games here.

5. Speaking of hockey - it's all about the girls!

Both the U18 (7:45 p.m. at BDO Centre) and U15 ( 7 p.m. at Stride Place) female Capitals have home games Friday night. And Saturday, the U15 squad will host Girls Hockey Day at the BDO Centre. You can cheer on the team against Norman at 2:45 and the 7th player will be Penny Martens from the St Eustache U9 female team. A number of minor female hockey teams will be in attendance as well.

6. Take in a garage sale

Yes, there is one on our garage sale page, garagesalejunkie.ca But there is also a Community-Wide Sale being put on by the Portage Heritage Committee at the CP Rail Station Saturday at 9 a.m. Details here If that is not enough for you, the Portage Terriers are doing their annual flea market Sunday at the MNP Exhibition Building. It starts at 11 a.m. and you'll find all the details here.

7. Fall Cleaning/Donate

Are you pulling out winter jackets and winter outerwear for the kids? Well if you come across anything that is in good shape and you no longer need it, you can donate it to Koats for Kids! They'll get it to families who need it the most and it makes a huge difference. Drop off locations here And if you are raking all the leaves that fell with the wind, snow and rain this week, the city of Portage will still take it all away for free for one more week - as long as you follow the rules. Details here

8. Fall Suppers/Road Trip

You may need a map to find some of these spots but there are fall suppers this Saturday at the Fraserwood Hall and the Brokenhead Community Hall in Beausejour in the evening. Both also have live entertainment. In Sprague, they are doing a fall pancake breakfast Saturday morning and on Sunday we find fall suppers in places like Polonia, Ile Des Chenes, Camp Arnes and Rivers. Details on some of these events here

9. Quilts, quilts and more quilts

It's the Country Lane Quilters Guild Quilt Show and it happens Saturday at the MNP exhibition building at 10 a.m. It's the first time they've been able to do this in years and the MAAS winners will also be announced. This is winners from different fairs from around the province over the summer going head to head. Many quilts will be on display. Details on the event here  Plus you can listen to the interview one of the organizers, Pat Crandell did this week on CFRY below.

Of course, this certainly isn't everything happening this week in and around Portage but it covers quite a bit. And you can always see more on our events calendar here. If you are ever holding an event, make sure to register and post it for free! Of course, it's free and you only need to do it once.
